Misconceptions About Forgiveness | Healing from Father Wounds (Daddy Issues Ep.46)

from Beloved: Christian Healing for Identity & Self-Worth · host Cherise Rochelle

“Have you ever thought you forgave someone—only to find that the anger or pain crept back later? Does that mean you didn’t really forgive, or could forgiveness be something deeper and more ongoing than we think?”Hello beloveds, welcome back to another episode of Beloved. Today we’re talking about forgiveness—specifically, what it really means, and why for many of us, it’s not a one-time decision but a daily practice.I used to think forgiveness meant saying the words once—“I forgive you”—and that would be it. I thought I’d move on, light, free, and healed. But what I didn’t realise is that forgiveness often comes in layers. It resurfaces when memories do. It’s tested when we have to face the same person again, or when pain echoes back through new experiences. So today we’ll talk about: 🌱 What forgiveness truly is (and isn’t) 🌱 Why forgiveness can be a daily decision 🌱 How to walk in forgiveness even when the hurt continues 🌱 And how God gives us the strength to forgive again, without losing ourselves1️⃣ Misconceptions About ForgivenessMisconception 1: Forgiveness means forgetting. It doesn’t. We may remember the pain, but remembering isn’t the same as holding a grudge. Memories can be invitations to reaffirm freedom—not proof that we’ve failed at forgiving.Misconception 2: Forgiveness means reconciliation. You can forgive and still maintain distance. Reconciliation requires both people’s willingness; forgiveness only requires your heart before God.Misconception 3: Forgiveness excuses the wrong. No it doesn’t. Forgiveness acknowledges that what happened was wrong—it just hands the responsibility for justice back to God.📖 Romans 12:19 – “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”Forgiveness is not about pretending everything is okay. It’s about deciding, “I won’t let this own me anymore.”2️⃣ Why Forgiveness Feels Like a ProcessWhen we’ve experienced deep hurt—especially from someone close like a father, partner, or friend—the wound doesn’t heal overnight.Sometimes you think you’ve moved on, but then something triggers you—a conversation, a memory, a similar situation—and suddenly, you feel that anger, grief, or resentment again. That doesn’t mean your first forgiveness wasn’t real. It just means the pain surfaced again and needs to be surrendered again.Forgiveness, in these moments, becomes maintenance of freedom.📖 Matthew 18:21–22 – “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”Jesus wasn’t asking us to count. He was teaching us that forgiveness is continual. It’s not weakness—it’s spiritual strength in action.3️⃣ Forgiving in Ongoing SituationsSometimes, forgiveness is made harder because the situation hasn’t ended. Maybe you still live with or must interact with someone who hurts you. Maybe your father still isn’t capable of showing up in a healthy way.Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending that’s okay. It means:* Setting boundaries where you can.* Asking God to protect your heart where you can’t.* Choosing to let go of resentment daily, even if behavior hasn’t changed.Forgiveness is not staying silent in abuse or injustice. It’s releasing hatred while still standing for truth.📖 Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”God sees when you forgive from a place of pain. He honors it deeply.🌿 Forgiveness as a Daily PracticeThere will be days when forgiveness feels easy, and days when it feels impossible. There will be moments when you need to remind yourself, “I already gave this to God.”You may need to forgive again for the same thing—because emotions are layered. You may need to forgive yourself for not being “over it” yet. You may need to ask God to help your heart soften one more time. That’s not failure, beloved. That’s faith in progress.📖 Lamentations 3:22–23 – “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.”Every day, God offers new mercy—and with it, new strength to forgive.💛 What Forgiveness ProducesTrue forgiveness doesn’t make you forget. It makes you free.It frees you from bitterness. It frees your mind from replaying the story in pain. It frees your heart to receive God’s love without walls.Forgiveness is not the end of your healing—it’s the soil where healing grows.🔍 Reflection / Journaling Prompts* Where am I still carrying pain that I thought I had released?* What emotions surface when I remember what happened?* How can I remind myself daily to give that pain back to God?* What boundaries or support do I need while continuing to forgive?💬 Affirmation“Forgiveness is not a one-time event—it’s a daily act of faith. Each time the pain resurfaces, I choose to hand it back to God. I release myself from resentment and trust Him to handle the rest.”📖 Closing Verse📖 Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”Christ forgave us, knowing we’d fall again and again—and He still chooses mercy. So when forgiveness feels repetitive, remember: you’re simply mirroring His heart.Thank you for joining me today.
