How much salt did you consume yesterday?"Healthy and Happy Morning! Welcome to Mission 2030– Episode 32, recorded on Smart Saturday, August 1, 2026.I am Sathiaseelan Nagadasan—Nutrition & WellnessCoach, Marathon Runner, Former Chief Engineer & Managing Director, andCo-Founder of Sathiavani Holistic Wellness Hub and Serve With Smile Wellnessand Nutrition Centre.Today's topic is: Sodium & Heart Health — ControlYour Salt Before It Controls Your Health.Let me ask you a simple question: When was the last timeyou thought about how much salt you eat? Most people pay close attention tosugar and fat, but very few think about sodium. Yet excess sodium is one of theleading dietary contributors to high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseaseworldwide.Sodium is an essential mineral. It helps maintain fluidbalance, supports nerve impulses, and enables muscles—including your heart—tofunction properly. The issue isn't sodium itself; it is the excessive amountmany of us consume every single day.WHERE HIDDEN SODIUM COMES FROM:Many people assume the salt they sprinkle at the dinnertable is the only source. In reality, a massive share comes from processed andpackaged foods. Common culprits include pickles, papads, chips, instantnoodles, bakery items, processed snacks, sauces, ketchup, and restaurant meals.Even foods that do not taste very salty can contain surprisingly high amountsof sodium.HOW EXCESS SODIUM AFFECTS THE BODY:When we consume too much sodium, the body retains extrawater to dilute it. This increases the total volume of blood circulatingthrough your blood vessels, placing additional strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys. Over months and years, this leads to high blood pressure, increased stroke risk, heart disease, kidney damage, and chronic fluidretention. These changes occur silently, without noticeable symptoms, untilmajor damage is done.RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE:The World Health Organization recommends limiting totalsalt intake to less than 5 grams per day—which provides about 2,000 mg ofsodium. Five grams of salt is roughly one level teaspoon from ALL foods eatenthroughout the day, including hidden sources. Reducing sodium intake can helplower blood pressure and significantly reduce the risk of heart disease overtime.FIVE PRACTICAL STRATEGIES: TODAY'S MISSION CHALLENGE:For one meal today, avoid adding extra table salt andchoose fresh, minimally processed foods. Notice how your taste buds begin toadapt—healthy habits are built one meal at a time.CLOSING:If this episode helped you, please share it with yourfamily and friends. Your one share could encourage someone to protect theirheart and kidneys today.I am Sathiaseelan Nagadasan, Nutrition & WellnessCoach.
