Mission: Impossible III (2006) and The Birdcage (1996)

from Film Stories with Simon Brew · host Simon Brew

In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, two movies that hit at the box office - but it didn't stop one of them being regarded a commercial disappointment. 2006's Mission: Impossible III went though a range of directors before Tom Cruise settled on giving JJ Abrams his feature directorial debut. But that decision brought with it delays, and the film's aftermath would see Cruise's deal with Paramount come to an end (temporarily). The Birdcage meanwhile landed on Oscar-winner Mike Nichols' plate at a point where people were beginning to feel his hit movie days were behind him. Nichols though would turn a Harrison Ford movie down in order to take this one on - and to work again with Elaine May. Stories of both are told in this episode.
