Mississippi Hanging Death Under Investigation | Spokane News

A Mississippi man, Jarques Ratliff, 51, faces murder charges in the hanging death of 29-year-old Black woman Tasia Fortune — a case igniting national outrage over racial violence and echoing the state’s grim history. Arrested on September 11 after her body was found in Jackson, Ratliff denied bond and maintains his innocence as investigators allege he used a cable to hang her from a tree. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide, and police say Ratliff had some connection to Fortune — though details remain hidden. With prior criminal records and looming additional arrests, the investigation continues amid deep public concern and scrutiny over justice in a state haunted by its past.
