Mister Deliver reveals the realities of life on the road as a delivery rider

Uber Eats rider Gideon Joubert, better known as Mister Deliver on social media, speaks to Lester Kiewit about the challenges facing delivery riders, from road safety concerns to the pressure of earning a living in the growing gig economy. Gideon, who has been a delivery rider for two years, admits that some riders take dangerous risks on the roads, but says the pressure to maximise earnings can influence behaviour. He explains how delivery payments work, with some trips paying as little as R8 or R9, and why riders sometimes feel compelled to take on more orders.
