Mitanni

In this episode, we explore Mitanni, the Hurrian-speaking Bronze Age kingdom that rose to power in northern Syria and Southeast Anatolia, and examine how it became a major force through elite chariot warfare, regional diplomacy, and a complex political identity. We look at the distinctive character of Mitanni society, where a primarily Hurrian population was ruled by an elite showing notable Indo-Aryan linguistic and religious influences, and trace its relationships with rival powers including Egypt, the Hittites, and Assyria. The episode also highlights important features of Mitanni’s archaeological and cultural legacy, such as its association with Hanigalbat and the elegant Nuzi ware pottery tradition, before following the internal succession struggles and outside pressures that led to its eventual collapse and absorption into the Middle Assyrian Empire.
