Mitchells Plain at 50: A suburb with a history that predates apartheid

Mitchells Plain is 50 this year, but its history stretches much further back. Doctoral researcher and journalist Nathan Adams has been digging through archives, deeds and government records and uncovered references to Mitchells Plain dating back to at least 1898. He also explores the mystery behind the suburb's name, the 183 pieces of land appropriated during apartheid, and how thousands of residents went on to build a vibrant community despite being displaced and constrained by the state's racial policies.
