In which the narrator recounts the fearful and legendary reputation of the elusive White Whale, whose towering white form and malevolent cunning have struck dread into the hearts of seamen far and wide, mingling mortal danger with near-supernatural awe. Thus is revealed the consuming monomania of the ship’s captain, Ahab, whose maddened vendetta against this terrible leviathan binds not only himself but his motley crew to a relentless and fateful pursuit.
