In which the curious nature and esteemed value of ambergris are elaborately discoursed, dispelling vulgar prejudices about the odours of whaling and its products, whilst the delicate humours and frailties of a young ship’s hand are brought to light amidst the perils of the chase. And then, amidst the labours of carving and trying out the whale’s rich gifts, the fiery heart of the ship’s try-works blazes with a hellish splendour, casting a somber illumination on the mariners’ strange rituals and the profound, often haunting, truths that lie beneath the ocean’s surface.
