Moctezuma's Zoo: Tenochtitlan's Astonishing Royal Menagerie

When the Spanish first entered Moctezuma Xocoyotzin's palace complex in Tenochtitlan, they found something no European ruler could match: a vast zoological garden housing jaguars, pumas, wolves, snakes, and a house of birds filled with every species in the Aztec Empire. But the most shocking discovery was the 'house of monsters' — a collection of albino animals, deformed creatures, and even a captive 'wild man' said to be a cross between a human and a beast. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the hidden world of Moctezuma's private zoo, which was not mere spectacle but a living symbol of imperial power, cosmic order, and the tlatoani's role as mediator between the human and the divine. Drawing on Bernal Díaz del Castillo's firsthand account and the Florentine Codex, they uncover how the zoo functioned as a microcosm of the Aztec worldview, what happened to the animals during the fall of Tenochtitlan, and why Cortés ordered most of the creatures killed. Plus: the surprising link between the zoo and Aztec tribute systems that brought animals from as far as Oaxaca and Veracruz. #Tenochtitlan #Moctezuma #AztecZoo #BernalDíaz #FlorentineCodex #RoyalMenagerie #Mesoamerica #AztecEmpire #Jaguar #Cortés #Tribute #Nahuatl #Quetzal #Pochteca #Chinampas #TemploMayor #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
