Molly Ryan's Christmas Eve follows a small Irish girl travelling in steerage aboard the steamship Astoria on a stormy Christmas Eve crossing the Atlantic. Leaning over the rail to glimpse what she imagines is a Christmas tree in the churning black water — she has never owned one — Molly tumbles into the sea during a collision.
