Mom Is Not the Household Manager: ADHD, School Chaos & Raising Capable Kids
from Steel Roses Podcast · host Jenny Benitez
Send us Fan MailBack-to-school season can expose every weak spot in a family’s routine—from overflowing paperwork and packed schedules to expensive school shopping, forgotten supplies, and the mental load that somehow always seems to land on Mom.In this episode of Steel Roses, I’m talking honestly about what back-to-school looks like in my house, why this year feels different, and how my recent adult ADHD diagnosis and treatment are changing the way I think about focus, emotional regulation, parenting, and the systems we create for our families. After years of feeling overstimulated, scattered, mentally exhausted, and like I had to force my brain through everyday tasks, I’m finally experiencing what it feels like to have better support. And that raises a much bigger parenting question: if getting the right support can make such a difference for me, how should I think about ADHD support for my kids? How do we help our children without letting them spend years struggling unnecessarily?I’m also digging into one of the biggest sources of mom burnout: carrying the entire household mental load. The towel left in the hallway. The school supplies no one mentions until 9 p.m. The clothes they suddenly outgrew. The empty shampoo bottle nobody thought to replace. These moments may seem small, but together they create an enormous amount of invisible work.Instead of simply assigning more chores, I’m thinking about how we teach kids to actually notice what needs to be done—to plan ahead, recognize when something is running low, prepare for school, take responsibility for their belongings, and become active participants in running a household. We’ll talk about:• Back-to-school stress and the invisible mental load of motherhood• Adult ADHD, medication, focus, and emotional regulation• Parenting children with ADHD and deciding what support may look like• Teaching kids independence instead of constantly reminding them• Moving from chores to shared household responsibility• Back-to-school shopping costs and kids’ endless growth spurts• Creating routines that reduce last-minute chaos• Protecting your own self-care, workouts, and mental health during the school yearIf you’re a mom trying to manage school schedules, ADHD, household responsibilities, parenting, work, and your own well-being without completely burning yourself out, this conversation is for you. What is one household responsibility you wish your kids would notice and handle without being reminded?Subscribe to Steel Roses, share this episode with another overwhelmed parent, and leave a review if the conversation resonates with you. Keywords: back-to-school mental load, adult ADHD in women, ADHD moms, parenting kids with ADHD, motherhood mental load, mom burnout, raising independent kids, household responsibilities for kids, back-to-school routines, working moms, emotional regulation, executive dysfunction, parenting and ADHD, invisible labor, family routinesSupport the showLove this content?
