Moment of Meditation: Drunkenness (Genesis 9:20-21)

from Wrestling with Theology · host Rev. Doug Minton

Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. Genesis 9:20-21 This is the first mention of wine in the Scriptures. As is the Holy Spirit’s prerogative, He shows it both as God’s gift but also the abuse of it. Noah was likely a farmer before the Flood. After leaving the Ark, he goes back to the vocation that he understands. He plants a vineyard and enjoys the fruit of his labor. However, he enjoyed it to excess. In his drunkenness, he staggered back into his tent and lay there naked. Likely blacked out drunk. We often think of Noah’s faithfulness and his blamelessness in his generation. But Noah was a sinner like you and me. A sinner saved through his Savior’s blood. Amen.
