Moment of Meditation: Mighty Men (Genesis 6:4)

from Wrestling with Theology · host Rev. Doug Minton

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. (Genesis 6:4) The Nephilim were the “mighty men … of old, the men of renown.” These were the men who were the models for all the heroes of the world. The children of the gods and goddesses and mortals in mythology. While our heroes are typically the “good guys,” the Nephilim were more like the archvillains of our comic books and movies. They used their size and strength to terrorize and oppress regular mortals. Their reputation was well-known throughout the world. And people feared them. The true mighty man of history, the real man of renown, is Jesus. He is true God and true Man. He has almighty power to do whatever He wants. What does He want? Does He want to oppress you? No. He wants to save you. He has done that through His death and resurrection. Amen.
