Money and Seashell お金と貝

Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. 前回に引き続き、お金をテーマにお送りしています。 We are staying with the topic, which is money. 前回予告した通り、お金と漢字の「貝」の関係についてお話ししたいと思います。 As announced in the previous episode, we are talking about the connection between money and the kanji for sea shell, “kai”. お金に関する漢字は「貝」が付くのはなぜでしょうか。 Why are there many money-related kanji characters have the sea shell element? それは、約3000年前、中国では「宝貝（たからがい）」が、お金の代わりに使われていたからです。 It is because specific seashells were used as currency starting about 3,000 years ago in China. 例は以下の通りです。概要欄をご参照ください。 Here are the examples. Please refer to the show notes. 「財」ざい、zai, wealth 「貯」ちょ、cho, savings 「貸」たい、tai, lending 「買」ばい、bai, buying Here are the two-character words: 二字熟語の例は以下の通りです。 「通貨」つうか、tsuka, currency 「財産」ざいさん、zaisan, assets 「貯金」ちょきん、chokin, savings 「貿易」ぼうえき、boueki, imports and exports 「費用」ひよう、hiyou, cost 次に、「買う」という言葉と漢字に注目してみましょう。 Let’s focus on the word and character of buy, 「買う」. 「買う」とドイツ語のkaufenは音が似ていますが、それぞれの語源は違います。日本語の「買う」は品物を手に入れたりサービスを受けたりするために、お金と交換するところから、「かふ・かう（交・替・代・換）」と考えられています。一方、Kaufenの語源はラテン語のcaupo「宿屋の主人」「商人」です。 The sounds to buy in Japanese and German, “kau” and “kaufen” are similar. The former is believed to derive from the word exchange, “kau”. The latter is believed to derive from the Latin word innkeeper or shopkeeper, caupo. 買うの音読みはバイですが、英語のbuyと似ています。しかし、これもまた、単なる偶然のようです。 There is another coincidence that we see in the kanji for “buy”. There are two ways to read the character, which are 「かう」 and 「バイ」.
