Thomas was staying with family along the Yellowstone River near Greycliff, Montana, when he heard someone screaming for help. Four people had been out on a raft and paddleboard when they struck a bridge pier and were thrown into the water. Three managed to swim to shore, but the fourth was being swept downstream, clinging to a cooler with no way to reach the bank on his own.
