1953, Hollywood Les tentatives de communication avec les morts du film Houdini marquent Mike Oldfield. C’est imprégné de cette référence et via un processus d’écriture spontanée que l’artiste va donner naissance à "Moonlight Shadow", qui paraît en 1983 sur Crises, son 8ème album studio. Un morceau où la nuit, la lune et l’absence ne font plus qu’un… et qui marque le tournant pop de Mike Oldfield, au début des années 1980. Mike quitte ses grandes fresques instrumentales pour toucher un public beaucoup plus large.
