Moral Consistency In Gaza And October 7 Debates

from The Darrell McClain show · host Darrell McClain

Send us Fan Mail A single sentence can expose how broken our moral language has become: a Jewish baby and a Palestinian baby have the exact same human value. If that feels controversial, we need to ask why and what tribal loyalty has done to our ethics. We work through a tense public debate about Israel, Gaza, October 7, and the word “genocide,” using the lens of “Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics.” We separate the legal question from the moral one: even when courts and institutions argue over terminology, what do we owe civilians, dead children, hostages, and families living under siege? We also confront a pattern many of us recognize in ourselves: “context” gets labeled as excuse when it humanizes the wrong people, but gets demanded as a prerequisite for condemnation when it protects the right people. Then we dig into the phrases that shut down accountability. “Human shields” is real in international humanitarian law, but it does not erase civilian status, and it does not cancel the attacker’s obligations of proportionality and precautions. We also bring the focus home to U.S. foreign policy, military aid, and the uncomfortable fact that American resources and diplomatic cover are part of the story and therefore part of our democratic responsibility. If you care about human rights, international law, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and moral consistency in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this conversation is for you.
