More pressure from Teacher Unions for Schools to close amid increasing cases on Covid 19

SAfm — More and more teacher unions are calling for schools to close. They want schooling suspended until after the COVID-19 peak has passed. Over 1,500 pupils and teachers have contracted COVID-19 since schooling resumed. The World Health Organisation has also warned against the re-opening of schools while local transmissions of the coronavirus are on the rise.However,The Council of Education Ministers has hit back, saying only the Cabinet can decide whether schools will stay closed or not. The council said groups and individuals who are not empowered by law do not have the authority to close schools. We spoke to Allen Thomspon, President of the National Teacher's Union (NATU) and got reaction from Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education.
