More Than 55,000 Sign Register to ‘Opt Out’ of Organ Donation After They Die - 29/10/2025

More than 55,000 people have formally registered their objection to being considered as organ donors when they die, new figures reveal.Since the middle of June, new legislation means that when a person dies it can be assumed they wish to donate their organs to be offered for transplant to another patient, but they are entitled to indicate their objections.The HSE set up an “opt-out” register for those who do not wish to become organ donors, and up to the end of September, 55,241 people had signed it to say they did not want to be considered donors when they died.The figures were provided by the HSE to Fianna Fail's Cormac Devlin following a parliamentary question.Deputy Devlin joined us on The Agenda this morning to talk to us some more on this.
