In 1890, a diminutive French aristocrat named Henri Toulouse-Lautrec received a commission to create posters advertising Le Moulin Rouge. His drawings of cabaret singers and can-can dancers became a sensation. In blurring the line between fine art and advertising, Toulouse-Lautrec set in motion an aesthetic that would dominate the pop-art movement of the mid-20th-century.
