Mortal Kombat II Movie Review: Retro Game Nostalgia & Why Video Game Movies are SO HARD to Get Right

Kicking things off with a brutal Mortal Kombat II movie review, Jared Pike and Bo Yokely dive deep into retro game nostalgia to figure out exactly why video game movies are so hard to get right. The hosts sit down to review the new cinematic trip to the Netherrealm, breaking down why leaning into R-rated fatalities, Karl Urban's hilarious Johnny Cage performance, and Scorpion's rich origin story finally broke the curse of terrible video game adaptations. The conversation quickly spirals into a massive nostalgic trip, featuring wild stories about a stolen Snickers bar at an arcade cabinet sparking a Mike Tyson's Punch-Out brawl. From remembering the legendary Contra 30 lives Konami code to the absolute chaos of screen peeking during 16-player Halo LAN parties, the hosts revisit the golden era of classic consoles. Finally, they debate Hollywood's shifting pop culture landscape, explaining why animated hits like the Super Mario Bros movie and Minecraft crush the box office while live-action flops like Kevin Hart's Borderlands miss the mark entirely.📺 Binge the entire Opposites Distract catalog right here on our channel, and make sure to subscribe for new episodes every single Wednesday!Chapters:0:00 - Mortal Kombat Movie Review & Action Ratings0:42 - How Karl Urban Saved Johnny Cage1:25 - 90s Arcade Fatalities & Video Game Violence4:29 - 90s Arcade Nostalgia & The Stolen Snickers Brawl6:17 - Scorpion Movie Origin Story & Lore8:04 - Movie Mood Psychology & Popcorn Action Films10:46 - Movie Theater Seating Etiquette & Chaos14:35 - The Legendary Contra 30 Lives Konami Code16:43 - The Secret John Madden Biopic Movie Audition18:51 - Halo LAN Parties & Screen Peeking Fights20:50 - Do Modern Kids TV Shows Move Too Fast?21:55 - Why Live Action Video Game Movies Usually Fail22:50 - Ninja Turtles Toys & Super Mario Bros Movie23:50 - The Last Of Us, Fallout & Minecraft Box Office27:10 - Why A Fortnite Movie Adaptation Could Be Huge27:48 - The Kevin Hart Borderlands Movie FlopFrom Mortal Kombat to Borderlands: What is the absolute best (and absolute worst) video game movie you have ever seen? 👇About the Opposites Distract Podcast:Opposites Distract is an unfiltered talk show hosted by two insiders from entirely different sides of the mic who rarely agree but always laugh.
