The research found that the facility-wide implementation of this method, which emphasizes techniques like baby-led connection and sealand maternal fine-tuning, successfully improved direct breastfeeding trends at hospital discharge. Although the overall 3-month exclusive breastfeeding rate did not significantly change, the method significantly reduced the risk of exclusive breastfeeding discontinuation for mothers who were exclusively breastfeeding when they left the hospital. The authors suggest that strengthening clinician buy-in is necessary to maximize the positive impact of the Thompson method, noting that partial implementation and external factors like increased birth interventions may have complicated the findings.
