International Journal of Nursing StudiesVolume 130, June 2022, 104220This study explored the effectiveness of various nonpharmacological techniques for improving disrupted sleep in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Researchers conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis of twenty randomized controlled trials to compare interventions against routine care. The findings indicated that several simple methods, including eye masks alone and the combination of music with earplugs and eye masks, significantly improved sleep quality. Ultimately, the research recommends that critical care nurses integrate the use of these highly effective, non-drug interventions into patient care protocols to promote better rest.
