International Journal of Nursing StudiesVolume 142, June 2023, 104467Predicting patient deterioration by nurse intuition: The development and validation of the nurse intuition patient deterioration scaleThis research details the creation and validation of the Nurse Intuition Patient Deterioration Scale (NIPDS), an instrument designed to enhance early warning scores by formally integrating nurses' clinical judgment. Recognizing that traditional vital-sign-based scores often lead to excessive false alarms despite acceptable performance, the study aimed to investigate the predictive value of nurse intuition. Through a prospective observational study in a Belgian hospital, the NIPDS was tested for its ability to predict critical events, such as urgent physician calls or unplanned transfers to intensive care. The findings demonstrated that the NIPDS is a valid and accurate instrument with excellent performance, suggesting it could be used by nurses alongside existing early warning systems to estimate clinical deterioration more effectively.
