Moto Conversations with Zach Lucero
from Moto Conversations Podcast · host Husqvarna Motorcycles Philippines
Show Summary: “Experience is a great teacher when it comes to riding.” One of the pioneers in the moto vlogging and custom bike scene, Zach Lucero’s name is known and heard by everyone in the riding community. Aside from being the guitarist in the local rock band Imago, he started Moto Builds Pilipinas, the country’s premier show for custom bikes. He also created Makina, a motorcycle vlogging channel on YouTube where he posts his reviews of different bikes. Zach has almost thirty years of colorful riding experience complete with all kinds of different motorcycles and rode in the most exotic places around the world. From buying his first bike in secret to almost stopping cold turkey as requested by his then-fiancee, Zach has a lot of stories to tell. He had driven in the soft sands of the Sahara desert in Morroco, in the cold snow in the high-altitude Himalayas, and the picturesque views of South Africa. He even rode a 40 million Peso street bike of Spanish Grand Prix rider Mark Marquez! While he currently slows down with the arrival of his son, Rocket, he still enjoys riding, albeit casual and laidback style. He believes life is short, and we all need to appreciate what life has to offer, travel more, and meet people. Exceptional Highlights: Riding is meant to be enjoyed. If you want to test your bike’s speed, go on the track. Whenever you ride, consider the people in your family or friends who are at home waiting for you to return safely. Always ride responsibly. You owe it to yourself and the rest of the motorists sharing the road with you. Show Highlights: How did you start doing videos on motorcycles? 02:59 Zach In 2012, we got an offer to do an all internet radio show with video, called the Radio Republic, to promote local music. It supported many local artists and went on for about five years. In the last two years of Radio Republic, I wanted to fuse music and motorcycles. And Moto Builds Pilipinas was born. And Makina, my review channel for motorcycles, came in to offer manufacturers a place where I can promote them as long as they support Moto Builds Pilipinas. What is it about riding that attracts you? 10:14 Zach My love for riding started with the BMX bike. That was the thrill—my first actual pedal and on two wheels. I just kept getting amazed. And for me, riding is a visceral thing. You’re out there, and the wind’s in your face. Cliché as it may sound, it's your connection to everything that gets you hooked to riding. Another thing is that it’s easier and more attainable to get a top-of-the-line bike versus a top-of-the-line sports car. With sports cars, they can go all the way up to 200 million. But with bikes, you already get a handful of good ones at 2 million. What has riding taught you in life? 29:25 Zach One, falling down hurts. And two, life is really short. If you don’t go out there and seize what you can, life is just going to fly you by. I tend to appreciate a lot of what the world offers because of bikes. When you’re on it, you meet new people, eat different things, and you get to travel. So for me, just go out there and do it.
