God's response was not annihilation but pursuit, sending Elijah to Mount Carmel for a showdown: one prophet against 850, on enemy turf, drenching the altar with water before God answered by fire and the people cried, The Lord, he is God . The message's center is Elijah's question: how long will you waver between two opinions? It presses the church to stop straddling the world and God, to pick a team, arguing that culture changes when Christians stop wavering and give God all their allegiance.
