Movie Date: 'Godzilla,' 'The Immigrant,' 'Million Dollar Arm,' and Special Guest Mark Ciardi
from The Takeaway: Movie Date · host WNYC Studios, PRX, GBH
In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen look at the theme of immigration on film through three of this week's big releases. "The Immigrant" follows the story of a Polish woman (Marion Cotillard) who falls victim to an unscrupulous man (Joaquin Phoenix) shortly after arriving at Ellis Island at the turn of the twentieth century. "Godzilla" tells the story of a monster who leaves his home off the coast of Japan to spend some time in Hawaii and California. And "Million Dollar Arm" follows a sports agent (John Hamm) who recruits two young men from India (Siraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal) to play baseball in the U.S. Based on a true story, "Million Dollar Arm" is produced by a real former baseball player, Mark Ciardi. Ciardi sits down with Kristen and Rafer, and reveals some fun facts about how the movie was made, and how much about the characters is true. A very special thanks to Jay Cowit, who performed and wrote music on this week's podcast.
