Good Girls Movie Night: From The Odyssey to Fifty Shades of Hay
from Good Girls · host SJ and Kay
We’re back from the movie theater with a double feature discussion. First we sat through nearly three hours of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and came out with mixed feelings: stunning visuals, endless fight scenes, and a version of Odysseus who keeps making the same dumb choices instead of using his famous cleverness. We talk casting (Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway’s very specific bedroom positioning, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and more), the surprising lack of smut, all the missed opportunities with the female characters, and why we’re recommending Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships as the necessary corrective. Then we pivot to pure joy and watch the trailer for Wicker starring Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, and Peter Dinklage. It just might be the horny, heartwarming, “Fifty Shades of Hay” inanimate-object romance we didn’t know we needed. We debate whether we’ll actually leave the house for it, share our secret old-person and childish traits, and put it out into the universe that maybe Greta Gerwig should make her own version of The Odyssey.
