匡衡回到家中，悄悄地在墙上凿了个小洞，领居家的烛光就从洞中透过来了。他借着微弱的光线，如饥似渴地读起书来，渐渐地把家中的书全部读完了。匡衡听说附近有个大户人家，家里有很多藏书，于是到了那个大户人家。他对主人说：“请您允许我在您家打工，我给您白干活不要钱，只要让我阅读您家的全部书籍就可以了。”主人被他的精神所感动，答应了他的要求。
