Hannay is sent to Scotland by Blenkiron and arrives in Glasgow, where he makes contact with a trade union man named Amos, through whom he will be able to get closer to his target Gresson, the American. Hannay speaks at a meeting which descends into violence and finds himself protecting Gresson in a street fight, but he makes an enemy in a Fusilier named Geordie Hamilton., who later learns that Hannay is planning a boat trip and tags along.
