We received a voice note from Mrs Van Staden, a teacher at a primary school, who says her school is holding a colour-run fundraiser this Saturday and the teachers are expected to be there. The problem? They’re not being paid for it. And that raises a very real question for teachers: when does your working week actually end? Because teaching isn’t necessarily a “bell rings at 2pm, you go home” job. Teachers can be expected to attend parent meetings, sports events, cultural activities, school functions and other duties outside the formal school day. The official Personnel Administrative Measures actually recognise extra and co-curricular duties outside the formal school day, and say educators are expected to account for 1,800 actual working hours a year.
