MSM 539 Dr. Paul Cotten - Music Therapy at Ellisville State School

Dr. Paul Cotten enrolled at Southern Miss in 1954 with the idea of being a choral director. In this episode, he explains how that led him to a career in music therapy for the treatment of the intellectually challenged. In 1960 Cotton started a music therapy program at Ellisville State School. He describes the how music was used to develop motor skills, affect mood and instill confidence. One of the major challenges the mentally impaired face is being isolated from the rest of society.
