Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there. In this segment, Donna Lee and Dr. Lucas Jacomides welcome Verna Stearns, a patient of Dr. Jacomides' with Multiple Sclerosis. Commonly known as MS, multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks myelin (the fatty substance that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers) in the central nervous system. Damage to the myelin and nerves fibers disrupts or destroys the signals sent throughout the central nervous system and may produce neurological symptoms that vary in type and severity. Verna explains that her relapsing-remitting MS (the most common type) is characterized by attacks or relapses of new or increasing neurologic symptoms. These relapses are followed by periods of partial or complete recovery called remissions. In remissions, symptoms may completely disappear, and some may continue or become permanent; however, there is no apparent progression of the disease during the periods of remission. A common symptom for patients with MS is disruption of the signals that regulate urination. For those affected, urination can become frequent and urgent, or they may struggle to urinate at all. Bowel elimination and retention may also be impacted. One amazing treatment for these issues is the Axonics sacral neuromodulation sytem. A small, battery powered neurostimulator implant is surgically placed during a non-invasive outpatient procedure. This device can be remotely controlled by the patient and provides gentle stimulation to the nerves that control the bladder and bowels. After a urodynamics assessment to determine the extent of her bladder dysfunction, Dr. Jacomides placed a temporary Axonics device so Verna could "test drive" it before getting the semi-permanent implant. Right away, she noticed a huge difference and decided this was the right fit for her. Once an Axonics rep helped Verna find the right settings for her unique symptoms, she no longer had to urinate every 15 minutes or limit her travel based on bathroom availability. She now serves as an ambassador for Axonics in addition to her advocacy for patients with MS. You can see and hear her story in the MS documentary Beneath The Surface.
