Murder In Moscow: Kaylee Goncalves’ Parents Renew Their Call for the Death Penalty (8/17/26)

Kaylee Goncalves’ parents, Kristi and Steve Goncalves, described how the murders continued to dominate their lives years after their daughter and three other University of Idaho students were killed in November 2022. Kristi said thoughts of Kaylee and the killings were often the first thing she experienced when waking up each morning, while Steve described how his wife went to sleep hoping Kaylee would appear in her dreams so she could speak to her again. They said the grief had become part of their daily existence even after Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary and received four consecutive life sentences without parole.Kohberger’s subsequent effort to withdraw his guilty plea reopened the legal battle and, for the Goncalves family, also revived the possibility that prosecutors could once again pursue the death penalty. Kohberger argued in his post-conviction challenge that he received ineffective assistance of counsel, was manipulated into accepting the plea agreement and had been led to believe the deal would result in better prison conditions, while also maintaining his innocence.
