Welcome back Dan Brantler forever I'm Brent I'm Dan this week We're gonna tackle music every aspect of it sometimes I feel like you pause like that like you want me to feel in the other half I leave room for you talk and then you don't and then I continue on How you been man before I don't know I feel about these headphones. Yeah, I'm gonna take them out on you. Okay Yeah, I'm doing alright, man What I don't know if I'm healthier, but I feel feel okay looking good man. Thanks dude.
It's getting complexion. Yeah, okay Is that what you tell people and they still need to lose my because that's what my doctor said your skin looks great Yeah, I'm glad you're doing so you're doing really well. Good job. Not dying, but I need to lose my fat ass That's just what my doctors are recently really yeah exact words pretty close.
Yeah, you can fill in the blanks. Yeah I'm playing lots of games. It's game season. It definitely is that's a good game season to me It's a great game season.
What do we got we got fallout red air redemption redemption? We've already playing black ops I've got EA access things. I download battlefield Which one a new one the new one. Yeah, I mean it's basically the same thing as the beta that we played yeah, but Not bad.
I like battle film when I like all duty Then you should try you don't you have any access to come it's five bucks a month That's it you play all the games All the ones that they consider in the vault are free Which you'll probably find more ships play on there than you would on like Microsoft game pass. Yeah, for example Well, but it also gives you like a trial of like all the new EA games that come out not only can I play them early But I can play them like full game like five days before release really yeah Yeah, we got ten hours of playing battlefield before Tuesday what yeah Yeah, you can cancel anytime. There's no badly nice Five bucks a month it's kind of worth it. I mean if you play it is even if you play one game That's the same as raining one some from yeah, it's also red box whatever screw that yeah, you know I want something to work for red box.
I still have use it really oh, yeah for your birthday Yeah, for my birthday. I got like a free game rentals or something. I don't know. It's not red games It's not something that's in my brain anymore.
Yeah, I mean sometimes I do just because if it's a new game like Assassin's Creed I might rent that to play for one day because I'm not I know I can't much to play I get it like I see why yeah, I just want to see what it's like or I know I'll enjoy it But there's no way I'm going to complete this whole game. Yeah, but that's how I feel about pretty much everything yeah Yeah, that's kind of a personality trait. Hey, man. You know what what this podcast has officially reached I know the official we were like a very close reach in 3000 unique downloads.
Oh really that's pretty solid. Yeah. Yeah, that's That's pretty good. When does money start rolling in?
Oh, I think 10,000. I think it's like 20,000. Yeah, it's like 10 or 20,000 Perf's it's almost impossible. Yeah, that's per episode.
I'm talking about 3000 total ever right out of all of our recordings Damn. Yeah. Oh, that's what I was talking about. It's like 10,000 per episode.
Yeah, they want like 20,000 a week Yeah, they want you know people to actually hear Here who ever listen yeah sure send us an email or I don't face but yeah, we talked about that shit a long time Probably because we never do podcast. Well, and also no one ever responds to anything we say that is also a good point Anyway, yeah, anyway, what are you doing? I'm working a lot. Yeah, that's boring.
No, it's here But that doesn't really much the same thing to you and playing video games doing stuff with the family Yeah, you're you're a little more active than I am I was a little more active, which means I'm a little more active. Is that why that happens? Yeah, she plans everything for me So you just go along. Yeah, so she's like oh, I want to do stuff.
Yeah, like we went to the rockabilly queue this yesterday Oh interesting the rockabilly thing. Mm-hmm. Never in Park Circle. That was exciting where there are lots of dudes that were like really into it and had the cars and that's like that here and everything yeah a lot of like hot rods and motorcycles and Grandmaster like pin-ups and yeah like at least a hundred chicks that think they're buddy page Yeah, now the whole thing was a little misleading because it's called rockabilly queue queue which implies there's barbeque right?
Yeah, there's no barbeque. What no? There's like some street food like and when I say some I mean like two or three places Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah, no, there's no like it's not food related at all.
This isn't a new thing They've been doing it for a while and it's like a seventh year. No what the fuck well, there's no Restaurant down there. Yeah, I guess like we went over and ate at Evo Well, then they should have boots out or something man You would think there's one do you cook and tacos outside and well high-five to that guy Yeah, they looked amazing, but I had just eaten at Evo. You ever been there?
I don't think I've ever been in an extra version That's what stands for. Yeah, pretty good man. Oh, yeah, I think my wife's boss Like I know cool story down. My wife's boss is like good friends with the owner or something All right, well the only reason I remember that is because she always asked Terry.
Hey, did you guys check out the pizza place? No, no, we didn't know some of their pizzas are different like that one that was like garlic and pumpkin Oh pumpkin like pumpkin like the insides of a pumpkin or pumpkin seeds or what? But it's just some of them just weird combinations, you know, like they had a pistachio pizza like the nut yeah Yes, I mean, but then I they have one called the port trifecta, which is like three different kinds of pork So you can't go wrong with that. No multiple Yeah, I feel like I'm a haremothorpe.
Do we need to buy some cough buttons for this show? Nah, we might make it easier I'm just leaving just not gonna edit. Yeah, it worked with us. We've six times.
I've edited well Yeah, because we had really good episode. Yeah, we're gonna continue that street and I don't know Yeah, it's whatever. Yeah, I like it, but I don't like it. Well, let's jump into it then.
All right. I got plenty to talk about You got plenty to talk about. Yeah, so we mentioned last week gonna do an episode on music Yeah, can I can I start with something go ahead man? Yeah, fuck you me.
Yeah, why why you bring up this topic a lot? I've canceled this topic at least three times. Yeah, it's okay. I'm not scared It's too big to tackle There's multiple reasons there's no three reasons.
It's it's almost like one. What are you thinking? What are you thinking? Why would you want to do an episode about music?
Why wouldn't I music is? Everyone loves music. Of course. However, it's a very personal thing.
Mm-hmm. We're both kind of stupid Yeah, and it's very important to a lot of people myself included So how the fuck are we gonna talk about music on a podcast and just like kind of trying to reduce it down? Like I'm almost a little offended that you even think that we could possibly do that I mean, we're not gonna be like well, you know, we have discovered today that this is definitely the best song ever. Cool.
We're not doing that Cool next week. We're doing comic books guys. Yeah, all fictional characters. We're gonna do all fictional characters next week We're just gonna talk about what we like the following week.
We're gonna maybe just do plants. We're gonna do plants followed by animals Are those too specific? Life life life. Oh wait, that was last week It is a very large topic and we're not gonna touch on all of it And we can always revisit it on a more specific point later on I guess I guess movie scores I would like to I'm gonna talk about that a little today, but I would like to eventually do one on that I guess why and then maybe how like how how do you do want to do this because there's a lot of shit dude Well, let's start with what kind of music did you grow up on like before you were able to choose the music?
Your parents chose music right for you to listen to pretty much I like some of it, but man, honestly my parents kind of sucked in the fact that they didn't get into music all that much When I was a kid like I did listen music. No, they did. Yeah, so because of that. Yeah, I do have an affection for Some country music the country.
Yeah, class country same here fucking Randy Travis, bro. I'm down Jackson What I'm down. Give me a little George Strait. I like it.
I don't know much George Strait But if it's that in that same time period, it is I'll probably get into it. Yeah Probably get into it. Same time. There's some like alt country.
I would classify it as alt country, but was popular back then You have to give me an example Alabama Cheat trick cheat trick close. Oh class on this rock. Yeah, but it's kind of country rockish. That's what you mean by alt country Yeah, alt country like you know Alabama, right?
Yeah. Yeah, like mountain music I mean some music. Yeah. Yeah.
Oh, let's let's I mean even really southern rock a lot of times Yeah, that's what you're saying there like southern rock. Technically slides into yeah alt rock from back then. I mean Leonard Scinner Yeah, it's kind of a country for sure. Yeah, but it's at the same time.
It's definitely rock See now we're gonna get into it like that. It's a hard thing to do. So I grew up on I grew up on Jimmy Buffett. Oh god Jim Buffett Alabama He's gonna he's gonna be screaming at the radio Even stuff like fucking Kenny Rogers dude like oh, I used to listen to Kenny G.
Oh wow I'm serious our mom should probably hang out You get there was a Michael Bolton on our house and What do we say? Can he G. Oh, can you yeah? That's a bear tone sex bear tone sex.
Sorry. I don't know I don't either I can tell you what song can you say I mean? I'm not sure I heard it isn't saying you please whatever Michael Bolton. Yeah, was oh, yeah, I Was the main song lean on me?
No, yeah, maybe no It's not lean on me. That's not his song. He sings a cover of it. I'm sure he sings a lot of covers What a man loves one was probably a big one.
That was either. Yes. That wasn't that wasn't his No, yeah, I agree. Anyways, so this week we do have a device hooked up to play a couple of little tresas couple samples here And they were not gonna play full songs because well, we're just not gonna do it.
They take way too much time Yeah, I just didn't know how you want to get into it because I mean Did you want to talk what aspects of music did you want to discuss? I mean this is just like a trip down memory lane and then brand's favorite songs I think that kind of mixed with like I didn't know what you wanted to talk about did you Want to talk about like that in like history the you know like I'm thinking less technical like less history and stuff But more of what we enjoy why we enjoy it and kind of like the the power of music that makes sense like power flow the emotional Energy that music has in it. Yeah, see that's a really tangible thing to talk about but I'm I'm following Are there certain songs you could listen to that make you cry when you hear me? Are you scared in?
Yeah, so I think I think we've probably prepared for this a little bit differently, but that's okay. Yeah, that's okay I think I was just a little concerned about the listener but Maybe people can relate maybe what you're thinking like almost Autobiographical a little bit like yeah, like this is our music and what we because everyone I think has their own taste I mean, I think everyone has their own taste everyone discovers music in their own way, right? Yes, why it's and why it's important to you and and different stages, you know that is one of the more interesting things about A good a great and movie about music high fidelity with junk music and the dude comes in and he's like, hey man You shouldn't have your records all stuck like this. I can't figure out how you have them organized and junk music's like autobiographically And that makes perfect sense So like and maybe we're already planning on doing that but that occurred to me when you wanted to talk about it You know like what you listen to growing up That it would make sense to kind of break that down into like, you know first concert first CD first tape.
Did you have tapes? Yeah? Yeah, there's one particular tape. I remember as a kid and it was um cake cake.
Oh, that's a good one. Mm-hmm No, you feel like that was a big influence white room. Oh, yeah, and a white room with black. Oh, that's green.
Korean. That's a minute. Yeah, sorry No, I really like cake too. That's why I was like, yeah, fuck yeah, maybe I had both.
I don't know Cake and cream, you know, this isn't that too? Yeah pretty much right. Yeah, you remember? Oh, yeah See that was the thing like and I can remember people give me shit about it when I'm like in elementary school like Well, what kind of music do you like because you know what the fuck was going on then?
Yeah, I think like fifth grade maybe like Fucking new kids like on the block. Yeah, that's what you had. No, it's not okay I was gonna make fun of you. I don't think that I had purchased a CD or tape but here's an exclusive family Sorry on Jessica.
My first tape was I stole a leaf Vanilla ice from my head. It's a good one to steal though. Yeah, because I was I was a fairly uh dorky six grader and That was the hotness man. I remember the that shit was hot.
I'm a little bit was talking about it I'm like I'm younger than you so that's pretty horrible. I apologize Middle school is my body new one. I bought my first CD in middle school with my own money And um it was blue streller Man, let's go tell them. I think that was one of the earliest ones I had as well the one with the green one with the cat Oh fuck.
Yeah, run around around and shut your face. Yeah, I played that CD out Yeah, did you discover hook like me before they turned into a single? Yeah, like Everybody needs to get paying attention to this fucking hook song because that is the shit. It's okay.
Yeah, it's really good But yeah, at the same time frame, you know, that's and middle school. I was into that and uh So see blue streller sister hazel County crows And it's a weird thing for middle school or to listen to I felt like yeah, it's so strange because you're you're just uh tiny bit younger than me So That was a completely different era for me because you know, there's about mid 90s early 90s Was more like my middle school. So like I had this weird cross section of like discovering hair metal Like fucking gnr and fucking poison and chill like that Whoa blow my mind. Yeah, fantastic.
Oh, yeah, you know intermix with like uh like discovering like Billy idle because he had a song on the radio and Yeah, definitely kind of a musical awakening. I'm just like honestly. I didn't give a shit about Uh, you know ice other than the fact that it was a hot track and everybody liked it. Yeah, I thought it was okay I learned all the words so everybody's weird.
There's music like that where you're like I mean this song's okay But like I guess because you hear so much on the radio that like you kind of know it inside now Yeah, even though it's like not your you know flavor for sure Um another phenomenon that maybe not been part of your life was Oh, yeah to a cassette. Oh man and so aggravating one of I mean the people who can do it are masters But that fucking walking the post shit where they talk over until yeah until the vocals kick in that's I mean It takes real skill for somebody to do it well And there are some broad gazers that blow my mind every time they do it It's like how do you know your sentence is gonna end right there? Oh, but motherfuck when some kid in the early 90s doesn't have that song uh like What was Love me for the money fucking acdc was on around that time. I'm like Listening radio and like top top 40.
I'm like, okay. It's coming. It's coming. It's coming And then motherfucker talked over the whole the first fucking 10 seconds of the song and I'm like I'm like waiting for him to stop so I can hit record.
I'm like fuck Is that why they did that? Is that why they talked over the first? I mean a lot of people did that just uh to fill the air Yeah, just to Fill the air and have more time to talk. I mean the dj Unless they were doing like a long form talk radio didn't really have time to talk So that's that's extra chance for them to to show off a little bit and then you know Kind of an inside radio thing like the the ability to do that without talking over the the lyrics of the song Yeah, or are cutting yourself short.
So you don't Yeah, they're you know, it's posting up on it. So what's the first concert you ever went to? And was it something that like you wanted to go see or you were kind of drug to? Mm first one was a Christian concert me too.
Yeah, Carmen. Uh, petra nice petra which um, I remember being way too loud did not like uh, I did not like petra but Picked up a girlfriend Well, I guess not necessarily first girlfriend, but like I girl to go on dates with At that thing. So I'm like, yeah, I'll buy the CD Turns out a couple of good tracks on there. Really?
There's one of them. That's really good something about fucking colors that I still remember But uh, yeah, not the greatest show in the world, but Not terrible. I mean Carmen put on a hell of a show. Yeah.
He was a big fucking entertainer in the whole like Christian circuit I mean, I must have been like five. He was a big deal. Yeah, it's like the atrical stage show. Yeah, it was awesome It was way too loud though, and I remember getting scared during some part where the devil came out He had a banister double or something.
That was a double Well, I mean there was a church real close to our middle school and I mean even back then I figured out that If they're so this is this is all pre-cell phone, right? Absolutely. Yeah college for me personally so As soon as I figured out in middle school that okay, so to avoid Going home where you're told what to do you gotta find something to do after school Yeah, because nobody had cell phones. They didn't necessarily know what you were doing.
Yeah, so you had to figure that out There was a church that had like a youth group that was very loose. Yeah, it was like right after school We kind of watch your kids mostly played basketball and try to hit on chicks. I think it's every church youth group pretty much So yeah, that's how I ended up at a pester concert. Mm-hmm.
Nice. What was the first concert that you were excited to go to that you liked picked to go to Like to tell you mine. That's your phone. I got uh Cumberland Street downtown.
You just have a bar thing It was called I remember Cumberland's you know, I went there it was a good one when I was probably 15 to see Johnny Socko A scab and Johnny Socko. I saw Johnny Socko with Cumberland's you really? Yeah, we're at the same place at the same time possibly was it the one when they shut it down? I don't remember that much.
I I didn't go well. Obviously until I love their rendition of the Windumb Georgia. I think it was yeah, that is good Uh, yeah, a little rock billion influence on them, too. Huh?
I finally had a goiter Um, I was pretty heavily influenced by my older cousin. I was like, oh three I was like three is like is there at least I could have been there No, it would have been before that because that would not like senior year in high school. Yeah, I was way different Yeah, I I grew up a lot on uh my older cousins influenced me with like a no effects. Yeah lag wagon You know more punkish.
Oh, yeah, I got I got into pumpkin in high school luba but So fresh from here in high school for me. It was like beginning of grunge. So it was Nirvana coming in super dope I wasn't I was never picking Nirvana for like SCP and uh Like smashing pumpkins when that shit started dropping fucking to a lesser degree, but Nine inch nails. Yeah That's a nice barrel.
Fuck dude. Oh, a lot of good albums out here when you're was that I had to be like 96 7 4 or maybe 93 Yeah, my freshman year. There was a ton of I think that's when they like labeled grunge really I mean really too if you think about it That was like the last nine years. That's more industrial than grunge.
No, I agree. Okay. Well alternative and again genres There's so many like sub genres within genres exactly, but um I think that's kind of when everybody starts to form their like musical tastes a little bit Middle school early high school. I remember discovering uh to my to this day still my favorite band is a bloodhound gang in middle school That's that's one of the weirdly defining things about you.
Yeah, and you're you're 100 percent serious. Yeah, I really like I've asked you that question 10 years ago and your answer today is still the bloodhound gang. Yeah, that's insane to me And and it almost made me dismiss you completely I totally agree and I totally understand like uh, that's a multi band. Okay.
See you later. I I really I really enjoy Comedy bands as well though like um fly to the concords. I mean, they're so good They're crazy. Bo Burnham.
I don't like Bo Burnham. What? Yeah, I just don't like his attitude Really like what did I'm 22 and I'm amazing. Yeah, but it's obviously not real.
You should hear some songs No, there's one particular one. I'm gonna play like I'm really good ones But um, you know just that type of music. I don't know. I just I guess I've always loved comedy And that is a way for me to you know lonely island.
Oh fuck. Yeah, I mean it's really good even childish yambino That's less comedy, but he's a comedian that does actually good songs Child's campy don't you know he does dana clover dana clover. Hmm. Isn't it clever?
It is I'll disagree with you on that one. What about this? That's just musical taste and just taste in general I do like dana clover. I like him a lot.
Yeah You don't like red bone? Late night. No. Yeah, well, jones can't be known I think Kind of pointless, which I mean there's nothing against the dude.
I think he is talented. Yeah, I don't care for his music How do you feel about techno? I have a thing I have a thing saucebar from heart first techno. Yes in my Yeah, daft punk.
I own all the daft punk albums. Did you really? Yeah? Yeah, I didn't get into them until later Um, yeah, they got um Crystal method.
Yeah for sure. There's a lot of that stuff. There was you know a little bit crossover there for a while We're ahead, you know with really a rock dancing became kind of a mainstream Pop for a while. Yeah, well, it still does when daft punk comes up with something dope.
Yeah. Yeah, like they came out with a top hit not that long ago Yeah, what was that one? Um lucky lucky. Yeah, and then um Pretty much anything they're a part of seems to be good too.
Like anytime they like they're featuring daft punk songs Yeah, it really does with a weekend. Yeah, we can um, yeah, wasn't it? I don't know starboy. I'm I don't know.
I don't know. I'm a starter Oh, but um, yeah, man. I don't know. I I like just about everything besides like I'm not a huge fan of new country and Not a fan of jazz I just jazz and blues kind of Now here's a question for you.
Mm-hmm. Might fall a little bit more solidly under the Under the podcast for you know people that are regular listeners if there are those So do you why do you think music? Why do I think music? Why do you think we as a species?
Oh, man, that's uh deep deep Um, I think if you want to break it all the way down human beings look for patterns music is nothing but patterns That's a really good point. Um, but I think somehow we are able to tie emotion into music You know, like it's just something about like a drum beat There's maybe like a pounding heart almost. Yeah, like you're here Anything naturally rhythmic is we find Beautiful or maybe or maybe associate with yeah So my question is why do you? You like certain kinds of music is just what you're exposed to I think or is it repetition?
Which would also be exposure. I do think you're pre Destin to like a certain type of music or you a certain kind of person, you know, you know, I think a lot of it your personal Music imprint is totally different from mine. Like well, I think it's your favorite band is the fucking bloodhound gang dude Do you know how many people say that not close to zero? You might be the only one They are going on to work.
That's so strange to me. Uh But awesome because that just means that it's more individual Yeah, I would say like I think it starts with kind of like the group mentality like the tribe mentality like your friends influence you And they're they're influenced by you. They're friends or older siblings Like oh, my brother likes this song this song must be cool And then they and then you play it so much that you become attached to it Right, and then you hear other songs that are similar And then you're like well, that's I like that too, right? And then eventually you end up in a place where you like go show your brother.
Hey, listen this cool song. I found he's like I don't like that That's weird. I love this song It is weird and it becomes like your own little mix that you like like a certain equation that You enjoy hearing it's strange. It's only it's almost like what kind of food you like?
Yeah, you know what I mean? And supposedly scientifically That's what me that's why music is so important to us. It actually lights up Pleasure centers in your brain Like food like sex like drugs like there's almost there's like a dopamine effect going on in your brain And I'm sure you're as familiar with like a freaking serotonin burst in your head as I am like At least I've done enough things I probably shouldn't have to recognize when my brain's dumping serotonin into my body And like trying to make me feel happy Uh Why does it do that though? It makes sense why food does it makes sense why sex doesn't it makes sense why drugs do it because it's artificial How about this?
Why do we like to listen to set songs? It's a really good question, man. I enjoy listening to it like hurt by Johnny Cash It's a really great song, but it definitely doesn't drop serotonin in my brain It does though does it even though it's a sad it does some yeah, I think it does And see that's where I think music becomes art because It's not it's not just nostalgia It's not always just oh, I remember this from when I was a kid or I remember this from you know My first kiss or I remember this from you know, we used to listen to this all the time When we were hanging out on the beach. It's not always that kind of shit And that it's this way with all art.
Yeah, that's true It is all art the more that you understand and the more that you appreciate the more it can affect you Yeah, and especially If the artist is portraying it well enough. Yeah for you to experience it like it's what's like a good storyteller like you can You feel the emotion behind him singing it. Yeah, that's what's so crazy like for example, Johnny Cash doing hurt That's not his song. No, no, it's a nice nail song But motherfucker that's his song and you listen to them both and it's exact lyrics Yeah, but some reason his is like damn gives me chill once thinking about it.
Yeah, I like I like nine-inch nails version two But it's it's different. It's not the same emotional level It is but it isn't like you can tell the resonance singing about something else that's going on with him So I feel more like but it's there's so much it's so much more poignant coming from cash because he's talking about something completely different than Residor is it's weird when you listen to like both of them like nine-inch nails I feel more like of a hate And his song wears cash I feel more of a um a little bit. Yeah And sorrow. Yeah, Residor pulls off a little bit more of an aggressive.
Yeah, like a young angsty kind of like you don't get me kind of feel Yeah, where's cash is like I'm like dying. I'm dying. This is close to the end. Yeah, he died like seven months after releasing that, right?
Yes, that's what it's so disturbing about it. Yeah, you know, that's his house in the video is it? If you watch that video Those are his real reactions to him returning to like his house and like him going through the feelings of like All these memories of what did it mean? Yeah, like everything's over I was all broken down man and I used to be the fucking man like yeah, it's real powerful.
Yeah, I mean That that one of the other song like I can listen to it man And it just another song that has a lot of motion behind it brick by Ben fold file. Oh, yeah That's good. Like I didn't know it was about an abortion. Yeah, a lot of people didn't learn that until like last year But like I've always like that song is always like put up my heartstrings for some reason I thought it was being alone.
No, I just I didn't know it was about that I know just it's it's a song that evokes loneliness. Yeah, but just isn't that what art is though? Yeah, that's I'm wondering why we enjoy even listening to stuff that makes us not happy Hmm. I mean everyone loves a good anthem like I get you pumped up like we're gonna go we're gonna fucking party out well, sure, but I Think there's an appreciation for somebody who can manipulate something whatever that is to invoke an Idea or a character or a feeling So masterfully that it makes pretty much everybody feel that way, you know like almost like a good villain Like everybody loves a good villain.
Yeah, you're not supposed to root for the villain You're not supposed to love the villain. So I can't anti-hears or so the best ones are the most complex and they like suck you in You're like oh my emotions. I don't know why he's a bad guy Well, maybe I kind of relate with him a little bit Yeah, and those are the best ones tell me everyone doesn't want to be Darth Vader and choke somebody with a force of course But then the the interesting thing about Darth Vader is that he's got this fucking inner turmoil going on the whole Yeah, and at the end like and you don't know how you want to feel about it either Yeah, like oh he's a bad guy then at the end the little spoiler he saves Luke Skywalker His son it's like oh shit. He had it in him the whole time right there's a reason why those characters are memorable because It's art.
It's artwork. Yeah, that somebody can make you feel that way Yeah, man. Don't you think absolutely like I mean it's it's weird like I personally I can't say that either I'll say I've never really felt that from like a picture but even pictures and paintings of course can you vote those feelings? Yeah, and it's so much more universal with music for some reason Yeah Well, I think it's because it's language based but you know not even language based because when you talk about scores for movies or even instrumentals Right, you still get I don't know It's like the base and the treble and then hi hats and you know just the melody I Don't think that it's a language, but it is well.
It is a language. Well, yeah in the respect that it's a form of expression You know what I mean? Yeah, I mean what's it make what makes it even crazier is like Most songs like at least popular songs use like the same exact chords Hmm. Yeah, like the major scale chords.
Yeah, it's crazy like there's um Yeah, so there's a band is called access of awesome. I want you to look it up real quick on the phone and play it There's a song called four chords Access of awesome, and this just goes to show how like Really all songs are pretty similar. I mean like uncannily similar is this on an album or at least these are coming there Comedy people okay, but it just improves a really good point just the similarity between I mean you can hear in some songs But the way they Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I'm Jordan I'm Lee and I'm the axis of awesome and I'm Benny We've been a company rock band for close to 40 years now What's the music starts because we never read a four chord song All the greatest hits in the past 40 years just use four chords same chords for every song is dead simple to write a pop here Just for yeah, yeah, these will hit one two three four chords Let me get this straight chicken little arm what you're um, we're gonna go get like you can take those songs Yeah Very original fit check it out The speed and melody at which they're playing this is the way Yeah, I mean it literally goes like 50 60 songs Yeah Yeah, I mean it's just those four notes stage Yeah, I mean it just be going on on yeah, it's just depending on how they're played. Oh 100% Yeah, I just thought I was well you played guitar a little bit Yeah, I played a little guitar player and I was in high school or middle school and then I played the cello and elementary school Man if you're not classically trained and I'm not You want to learn how to play other people's songs for the most part?
Yeah, and yeah, it becomes obvious pretty quick. Yeah, you can play just about anything G E C and okay? That's pretty much it yeah Yeah, basic chords. Oh, it's right after there.
Oh, damn it. Oh, you'll play sats on okay a minor e minor Just as the course is all you need that's pretty good. What about what about that? I mean it's still it's well.
It's like a painting They only have colors all the colors are the same but it's how they put the colors together that makes the painting You hear that somebody sawing something Yard work But yeah, it's um, yeah, I guess it's the same way you can look at it like that where you know I thought that was the beginning of dr. Field game for a second Okay, so let's let's go back I'll buy a graph a little bit so Growing up, okay, so you did you have car growing up? Did I have a car? Yeah, like did my family have a car?
No, did you have a car post 16? Yes, my turn 16. I've got a car actually 15 and yeah take that CD player radio what do you have? CD a c-player to play.
Yeah, I mean this was late 90s So fancy you can go to a car store and get one for a hundred bucks and yeah, that's one of those But there's never enough where you one of those like speaker guys. Did you have a lot speakers in your car? I had a air quotes system. Oh, yeah, I had two tens and I was a cheap knockoff ran and then you have an amp and I got a $600 noise ordinance ticket and then I didn't have anything whoa Are you serious?
Where'd you that? It's great and you's great. I did one time a parent So I went without them. Wow, and I was like, I'll just do community service what they can give you ten hours No, a hundred hours of community service.
Oh, this is where you got your community service running Yeah, I thought it was from C Because the judges I guess like oh, you want to come here without your parents your parents don't know you're getting a ticket Oh, like did they call you out on that? I don't remember them doing that you got that vibe Well, I pretty much like when they said something I don't have six hundred It was like six hundred twenty dollars. I don't have that. Can I do community service?
She's like yeah? No problem. You need to community service hundred hours. Oh, just kind of over Yeah, cuz what high school kid has an extra 600 some bucks lay around it was a boogas ass ticket is what it was Did you ever get into any forced music?
Any what? Forced music? That's what I call band and choir. Stuff like that.
Because I don't feel like there were lots of kids that did that on their own. I've never had a few for sure. They were like, I really, really want to play the trombone. And they just got into it.
Well in fifth grade I played the clarinet for, no, the cello for a year. Damn. And then in sixth grade I played the clarinet for a year. Really?
I didn't like it. Why didn't you like it? It's a pain in the dick. Well the clarinet's a girl instrument.
It is except not a girl instrument. But sure. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I feel you.
It's a woodwind. It's not a sax. The cool people played the saxes. Yeah, they thought they were cool.
Yeah. But yeah, I understand. Well yeah, you can almost get away with that through middle school. But if you went into high school still in the band then...
And on top of it I just hated doing any extra work outside of school. Yeah, that too. And that's pretty much what killed it for me. Oh man.
So hard. Yeah, I took piano lessons when I was in elementary school. And I had a piano in her house. And she played church music on the piano.
So I got to learn a few things on the piano. See learning a few things. Not so bad. I mean honestly it's amazing to me that anybody makes it through classical training and music.
Yeah. It's so much work. Yeah. Like I don't understand how anybody even still likes it after studying it.
It's so difficult. Yeah. I mean even as a kid sitting in front of the keys like... Ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring.
Like for fucking hours. Like just trying to get your fingers to hit the notes and knowing where they are. Fuck you man. It was hard.
It was so hard. Furlice. No no no no no no no no no. I can play that.
Sure. I remember most of it. Chop 16. Yeah.
All the kids can play. You remember big. Yeah. Got a question.
Did you have a bigger bass? Sure. Your playing instrument besides guitar and a little piano? No.
I mean play a little guitar. Almost in a band for a while. Play a little bit in college and a little bit in high school. I wouldn't have to play in any bands.
No. I mean most of the people I played with knew that I wasn't playing any bands. knew that I wasn't enough to play with them. Yeah.
I occasionally got good enough to play with other people. Yeah. And that's a big of a song. It's like, OK, I'm going to practice this cover over and over until I...
Yeah, that's the thing. That's actually like rehearsing for a performance. Like, I'm not going to write a type thing. We're talking about just jamming.
Like, you just play a tune, I'll match your tempo. Yes. I'm not very good at tempo stuff. Good enough of that for like a minute.
Exactly. I can definitely rock out some vocals though. I love karaoke. Man, and I can see the attraction.
Like, when you and one other person, let alone like three other people, are on the same page, thinking the same thing, going the same place, like on this weird ethereal journey. And then like, you all move at the same time, do the next thing. I can't imagine how bands that do that shit for a living. Yeah.
Feel all the time because you feel like a fucking wizard when you're doing that shit. I feel like a rock star. Yeah. I feel like a rock star.
100%. And dude, just the couple of stupid little bar gags that I played with one of my old roommates and people like going nuts for just a little bit. Yeah. And giving us like all kinds of attention.
I'm like, I can't imagine what it's like to be in front of like a stadium. Oh, everybody is blowing you with their mind. Just like, you're the greatest thing of all time. Like, I can't imagine that.
It's like when I did that stand up competition in front of like, I don't know, maybe 100 people. Yeah. Theor99, so 99 seats. So it wouldn't pack.
Anyways, and then like afterwards, some people you don't know going, hey man, you're really good. I voted for you. And it's like, for real? What?
Nice. Yeah. I mean, even just getting a laugh in there would probably be pretty great. Yeah.
It feels amazing. Like, other people are recognizing me and I don't know. It's just weird. It is weird.
And you understand just a tiny little piece of like what fame feels like. Oh, I can see why artists are so angsty. Oh, yeah. Because like, if you've gotten that and then you just don't get it for some reason.
Dude. Like, no, I did this last time and everyone cheered. And now everyone's booing. I don't understand what's going on.
I'm sure it's addictive. I'm sure it's a drug. Yeah. Absolutely.
It is. I mean, it's not an actual drug, but it does the same thing. Drugs. We talked about that already.
Yeah. For sure. And so I kind of understand the other side of it too. Like playing music for yourself and playing music with other people that you don't intend for other people to necessarily enjoy.
Like, you're cool with it if they do. But otherwise, you know, it's kind of like this podcast. It's mostly for us. Oh, it's for us to hang out and talk about things that it's I mean, it is for us.
Like the fact that anybody ever listens to it is pretty fucking amazing. I'm sure there's a lot of bands that feel that way. Hey, at some point, Winter and Skinner only had like 10 people listening to them. Yeah, I guess so.
I guess they'll be every band, right? Yeah, exactly. Oh, man. So.
Well, you want to get into what you wanted to talk about? What do you mean? The list you made to make? Oh, yeah.
Yeah. I didn't know how to prepare for this thing, man. Yeah, I get it. I was a little upset about it, honestly.
Why do you say anything? You dick. Just say, hey, let's do something different. Like on my list of shit to talk about, the first one is why with a question mark.
Yeah, we did that. And then with a circle around it, it says ramped. Which you did? Like I intended to go on a rant where I give you lots of shit about beating brain inside.
You kind of did. I wanted to give the team more. I get it. I'm not going to do it, though, because now I'm looking at you.
I can't imagine that argument in my head anymore. Yeah, I would have been arguing. I'm like, yeah, no, I totally understand. I'm saying.
Okay, I can't. What did I want to talk about? Oh, yeah. I sent you earlier like a...
Terri and I used to do this all the time, you know, just to entertain ourselves. We used to go to a bar by our first barman, Charlson. I was like all the time, big surprise, I know, right? But we don't really do that anymore.
And we would go down. Have a couple beers and then somebody would come up with a topic. Like, come up with your top 10 road trip songs. And so we would just sit there at the bar and on napkins.
And we would like come up with them for a little bit. And then you compare. That's the fun part. And you're like, yeah, what did you get?
So I was thinking about that when we were trying to prepare for this. And I was thinking about coming up with five songs, plate, funeral, which I always thought would be entertaining. Yeah. Like, what are you going to come up with?
And so I have a feeling you're probably going to know most of mine, but I might have to play a couple of them for you. I think we should play them anyways. Oh, okay. Just like 30 seconds.
I'm down. Okay. So let's go with... I didn't really write them down in particular, but I guess let's take them from the top where you would start.
Okay. And then how you would close out. So five to one. If I put them in order.
Sure. And it's hard to put songs in order. It's like, what's your favorite movie? Like, don't be a dick.
I like a lot of movies. No, I totally agree. I don't have a favorite band. And a lot of people are like, oh, you don't have a favorite band.
And I'm like, I don't know. Maybe because I love music too much. I can't pick one favorite. Yeah.
Don't be an asshole. Yeah. It's like who's your favorite family member. It's like saying what's my favorite video game.
Our favorite food even. Our favorite food. Yeah. Then again, pizza wins though.
But pizza has many options. It's two different kinds of pieces. Anyways, you want to go first? I'm hoping we get some matches here.
Let's go with what you're going to hit them with up top. You know, people are walking in the room. Okay. Walking in the room.
You hit them with up top. And I'm saying, me personally, I'm not starting the music until most people have mostly sat down. Because I want them to hear that shit while they're staring at my casket or whatever it is I have up front. Yeah.
So what would you start with? All right. So this one was, I guess this is actually my number three one on here. But this is definitely what I would play while people walking in sitting down.
And it's kind of a toss up between two songs. Same artist, Colin Hayes. Oh, Colin Hayes? Yeah.
Colin Hayes. Either. I like one song more than I like the other, but the other fits better for a funeral. I like overkill.
I love that song. Not really a funeral-y song. So I was thinking, wait for my real life to begin. Huh.
Overkill. And that is the name of the song? Yeah, overkill. Colin Hayes.
What the fuck? Okay. I've done poorly. I just do Colin CO, LIN.
And then overkill. One word. Oh, there we go. The acoustic version?
I mean, sure. It doesn't matter. I can get to sleep. You've heard the song for sure.
Nice, too. I can't believe Colin Hayes did a minute work. Well, this is a... This is a primitive work.
Well, they're all his songs anyway. Yeah, but that's a good one. You're gonna start with that one? Yeah, I think so.
It's not really a deathy. Hold on. Nice. Nice.
Nice. Nice. Nice. I think...
...night after night, my heart beat the shows. I think you would start out very similarly. Because I had a very similar one to start with. Uh, no, no, no.
A day in the life. This is Beatles. Nah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A bout a lucky man who makes a grade.
That's good one. Fuck you. Yeah, because I agree. That's a good point.
Like, you almost wanna make people remember that they're gonna die. Yeah, kind of. Even though you're here to see me as a dead person. Yeah, you're gonna be with me.
Yeah. So you gotta like remind them of their mortality. So like, yeah. From Colin Hayes.
Yeah. Fuckin' perfect. And his other song, Waiting for My Real Life to Begin, is kinda similar thing. Like, basically like, you know, this is the end of, I'm waiting for my life to begin.
Really, it's about, like, waiting for something good to happen. Hell yeah. Alright. Alright, number two.
And why? I think, I think next I'm gonna stun him. Yeah. I'm gonna go to a car funcle Santa Silence.
Ooh. Ooh. I feel like everybody knows his song. Everybody knows his song.
I'm gonna miss it. I'll still play it. Just so you get, just, you know, get him. I mean, it's a sad song, but it's like, it's not really even a sad song.
It's like a dark song. You gotta bring him down so you can build him back up. That's the way I'm feeling. Hmm.
I'm gonna bring him down first. Mm-hmm. Does it sound or sounds? Does it sound or sounds?
I think so. Yeah, I should probably know. Hello, darkness, my old friend. Hello, darkness, my old friend.
It's gonna be fucked up. Think I played a few times. I know. I know.
I appreciate that. I appreciate that. I appreciate that. I'm like a little bit.
But it's a happy song still. I'm glad you said that because it is. But it is a, I mean, hello, darkness, my old friend. Yeah, it's a, uh, it's a freaky song.
It's just a weird word in itself, right? It's not a good one. Almost kinda touched on what you were talking about before. Like, why?
You would be finding something that was depressing and beautiful. Yeah. It's back as taking the dark turn. Really?
It's going to be the good dark? No, I expected you to go darker. Yeah. Okay, so I'm in a different direction personally.
I am, I'm starting with dating the live. Then I'm, uh, gonna line it up a little bit. Strangely enough, also, I'm starting to garble. Really?
Yeah, but, uh, different song. Hmm. That's really odd. We're getting a little bit over left.
This is only looking for any dark. Yeah. Yeah, this is kinda building from your last song. See that?
Yeah. I hope our number one songs match. Yeah, we'll just, yeah, if they do, we'll just quit. We'll just quit and get married because obviously that's what it's about.
