‘Music-Based Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases’ With Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, M.D., FAAN

On this episode of The Power of Love Show with TJ and Taj Jackson we welcome special guest, Dr. Alexander Pantelyat M.D., FAAN. Dr. Pantelyat is a movement disorders neurologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he directs the Johns Hopkins Atypical Parkinsonism Center and the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine. Dr. Pantelyat's work is focused on the discovery and validation of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for parkinsonian disorders and on music-based treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Pantelyat has been the primary investigator for: * DRUM-PD, a controlled study of West African Drum circle classes for Parkinson disease (significant improvements in quality of life were found after 6 weeks of drumming); * Parkinsonics, a controlled randomized crossover study of choir singing vs support group attendance for Parkinson disease (objective voice loudness and motor improvements were found); * Guitar-PD, a randomized delayed-start study of group guitar classes in Parkinson disease (significant improvements in anxiety and mood were noted at the end of study interventions), * and DRUM-PD/HD, a pilot parallel group study of side by side drumming for patients with Parkinson disease and Huntington disease as well as their care partners.
