MUSIC: Idlewild - Captain (1998)

from Oddcast: Movies, Music & Gaming

One of our favourite bands from our teens, Idlewild stormed onto the scene with this mini-album/EP 'Captain'. It still feels as fresh today as it did 23 years ago and we will take it track by track. It's a blessing that Idlewild's Captain is compressed into a mere six tracks. In this time, Idlewild evoke so many great bands that Captain proves a staggering introduction. Idlewild's initial charm is, basically, that they rock. That much is beyond dispute. But between the amphetamine buzz offered by "Last Night I Missed All The Fireworks", the black metal thrashes of "You Just Have To Be Who You Are" and the glorious, explosive choruses of "Satan Polaroid" there's the signs of an incendiary presence that can reconcile the bubblegum grunge of the Foo Fighters with their desperate, angry roots in Nirvana and still have space to invite in the portentous riffs of the likes of Metallica or Soundgarden. Captain says everything it needs to say, and it says it fast. If only some other bands had such terrific brevity. --Louis PattisonWebsite: anewwinter.netPatreon: patreon.com/anewwinter Instagram: @anewwinter Twitter: @anewwinterEmail: [email protected] or [email protected]'s Twitch Channel https://www.twitch.tv/legassiqueDan's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDRTt17kVazujMJbxo688sASupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/anewwinter.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/anewwinter. They were young, dumb, and full of it. What followed were comedy shows so explicit, “genitalia” was practically a term of endearment.Fast forward 5 dogs, 6 cats, and way too many weird inside jokes later, Sasha and Joe are no longer young or dumb—but they’re still brimming with you-know-what. Here, they’ve teamed up to bring you a podcast where they interview a guest who passionately defends something universally hated, misunderstood, forgotten, overlooked, Mandela-effected, canceled—you name it. The key? They LOVE it. From toupees... to B-movies... to aliens, psychedelics, and the occasional surprise character, Sasha and Joe are here to spread love to the world that birthed them (but maybe should’ve used protection). So come and get that love because no one else will give it to you like we do.Also, don’t forget to check out the Patreon Bonus version of the show:https://www.patreon.com/c/ShutUpILoveItP Explicit Bringin' it Backwards Adam & Tera Lisicky Bringin' It Backwards: podcast – giving driven musicians the invaluable insight they need to succeed in the music industry, by revealing how legendary musicians achieved stardom.
