MUSIC OF A LIFETIME Eps. #4 - GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE PRESENT 'THE MESSAGE'

Reagan-omics is putting more and more poor and hard working people in the welfare line, mostly in the black community. Times are hard, things are bleek, desperate, and full of despair.  Sure, there are some highlights. During that year, Michael Jackson continued to step out the shadow of his brothers when he releases another solo album that would end up being the most popular and best selling album of all time, the historic LP called "Thriller." The David Letterman show debuts on late night TV on NBC. And there is one more thing. There's a new hope in a culture of art, dance, 'storytelling' known as rapping,  and music that has burst out of the streets of New York. And it's called hip-hop. One of the leaders on the musical front are 5 "MC'S" and a DJ from the Bronx who call themselves 'Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five'.  Signed to Sugarhill Records, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five have already turned heads and shook booty's on the dance with classics such as "Freedom." In 1982, producers Clifton "Jiggs" Chase and Duke "Bootee" Fletcher came up with 'The Message' which also featured rapping from MC Melle Mel. 'The Message' became an instant classic because of the splintering social and political commentary the song delivered. Even to this day, 'The Message' remains in the "best of" category for countless hip-hop artists, groups, producers, fans, as well as music enthusiats from all over the world. For me, "The Messsage" is #45 on my list of the 50th Greatest Songs and Records of my lifetime. To me it speaks to how music carries the truth in the anecdote of how "art imitates life".  For many of us, 'The Message' is a anthem of how life in America is so much different for many of us.
