Harpiste Eline Groslot koestert jeugdherinneringen aan de Schilderijententoonstelling van Modest Mussorgsky. Ze leerde het werk kennen in de oorspronkelijke versie voor piano en ziet vooral de tekeningen en sprookjes uit haar eigen kinderboeken voor zich. In 1874 componeerde Mussorgsky deze muziek op 10 schilderijen uit een overzichtstentoonstelling van kunstenaar Viktor Hartmann. Pas in 1922 ontstond de orkestratie door Maurice Ravel.
