My Chaplaincy, credentials, stories

from The Chaplain's Table · host Simcha Lefton

According to the transcript of your audio, you actually did use the word "thinking." You stated, "**I emailed them that I'm thinking of thinking of going to a different place**" [1]. However, if you would prefer the LinkedIn post to reflect that you said you were going to be looking into other places, I have updated the draft for you below!*****Sometimes having a "heart of gold" can backfire. Here is a hard lesson I learned about career transitions and over-communicating.**Recently, there were some minor changes to my hours, and I sent an email to my employer mentioning that **I was going to be looking into other places.** My timeline was entirely uncertain—it could have been six months, a year, a year and a half, or maybe I wouldn't leave at all. Because it usually takes this company at least six weeks to switch staff, and I absolutely never want my patients to be left without a chaplain, I proactively gave them the name of another chaplain to look into just in case. My plan completely backfired. The very next morning, I received an email stating: "Resignation effective immediately". I was instantly locked out of my computer. I had never used the word "resign," I didn't provide a resignation date, and I certainly didn't write the kind of "thank you" letter a chaplain typically writes when officially stepping down. **My advice to my fellow chaplains and caregivers:** We often have huge hearts and feel deeply responsible for our patients, to the point where we try to plan for every slight possibility so they are never left without care. However, be incredibly careful about communicating potential career moves too early. Your good intentions and desire to protect your patients might just be interpreted as an immediate resignation. #Chaplaincy #CareerAdvice #HealthcareProfessionals #ProfessionalBoundaries #LessonsLearned #CareerTransitions
