Now, they are trying to rebuild from an awful defense, resulting from terrible choices made on the defensive side of the ball. USC Football will once again have a tough schedule, facing four opponents in ESPN's preseason Top 15 rankings. Despite this, there is reason to believe that USC can improve in 2024 because of their upgrades on the defensive staff. Lincoln Riley went out and hired former UCLA defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, who fielded a Top 15 scoring defense in 2023. Along with Lynn, Eric Henderson (co-DC/DL coach), Matt Hentz (AHC/LB coach), and Doug Belk (DB coach) make up a fresh, elite defensive staff. I expect USC's offense to take a step back with the departure of Caleb Williams, but the defense should improve by a sizeable margin with a better coach.
