My Philosophical Position [02/10] Ontology

Philosopher Bry Willis discusses metaphysics and his position of Mediated Encounter Realism (or Mediated Encounter Ontology). Relations are not secondary connexions between already completed entities. The entities are abstractions drawn from relatively stable patterns within relational events.An encounter-event includes:a form of mediation;an organised presentation;constraints that prevent the event from varying arbitrarily.Objects and subjects are therefore real, but not fundamental. A chair, body, institution, electron, or person is a scale-dependent stabilisation of relational constraint, not a self-grounding substance. Stability is real. The conversion of stability into metaphysical thinghood is optional.This position resembles ontic structural realism, but it is not confined to the structures described by fundamental physics. Physical, biological, perceptual, linguistic, and institutional organisations are not merely decorative layers sitting above the only reality that counts. They are distinct scales of structured encounter.Philosophy should expose inherited architecture before erecting replacement systems.
