My Thoughts On Michigan State Football's 2023 Offense | Michigan State Football 2023

from College Football with Sam · host Samuel Recker

The Michigan State Spartans commanded the 92nd-best scoring offense in 2022 (scoring 24.4 points per game) compared to the 31st-best scoring offense they had in 2021 (scoring 31.8 points per game). What happened, and how much will the offense improve in 2023? Runningback Kenneth Walker leaving after 2021 was expected and losing a generational talent obviously hurt Michigan State in 2022. The Spartans only rushed for 3.8 yards per carry last season and had less than 1,500 yards on the ground. Couple that with quarterback Payton Thorne having an inconsistent year and wide receiver Jayden Reed suffering from an injury, and you have an offense that was among the nation's least productive in 2022. Payton Thorne transferred to Auburn this preseason, Jayden Reed was drafted by the Packers, and wide receiver Keon Coleman transferred to Florida State. The Michigan State offense will improve in 2023, especially regarding the run game. Mel Tucker brought in running backs Nathan Carter and Jaren Mangham from the portal and the Spartans have five offensive linemen with over 200 snaps of experience. Also, the tight end room is deep with starter Maliq Carr returning and three new tight ends coming in from the transfer portal. The wide receiver room will be the weakness of this offense, but the run game should drastically improve and I expect Noah Kim to be an upgrade at quarterback over Payton Thorne.
