This opening chapter is all atmosphere, tension, and intellectual bravado. Futrelle builds the puzzle piece by piece, inviting listeners to wonder: How can a man escape a cell without ever touching the lock? Part 1 ends with Van Dusen alone in the darkness… already thinking.   About the Author Jacques Futrelle (1875–1912) was a journalist, editor, and mystery writer whose "Thinking Machine" stories became instant favorites among puzzle‑lovers.
