Hello and welcome to the Center for Success Career Talk Podcast, a series that provides tips and advice for fine-tuning your resume, networking and getting that first job. The hosts for the series are members of the Center for Success at St. Xavier University in Chicago. Hi everyone, thanks for joining us.
My name is Tatiana LeRach and I'm an Academic and Career Resource Advisor in the Center for Success at St. Xavier University. I'd like to welcome you to our Career Talk Podcast series. Today, I will be discussing NACE Core Competencies.
NACE Core Competencies are useful skills that each aspiring professional should know, understand and apply. Throughout this podcast, I'm going to explain how each competency can be displayed in a work setting. I encourage all listeners to brainstorm ways of showcasing your proficiency with these competencies to utilize an job interview or within the workforce. The first NACE Core Competency I will discuss is Career and Self- Development.
This competency is critical to showcase to employers that you care about professional growth and are interested in developing your skills to thrive within your respective industry. This competency can be displayed by attending an event that is hosted by your employer for networking opportunities. By attending events, an employer will see that you care about connecting with peers within your field, developing important skills, and you would be displaying the ability to be an efficient and adaptable employee. Communication is extremely evident that efficient communication is critical to ensure a company is running in a productive and impactful manner.
To display effective communication in a workplace, it would involve not only communicating in a respectful and inclusive manner, but you would also need to be an active listener. Being an active listener includes paying attention to the person speaking, maintaining eye contact, and providing important feedback and encouraging verbal cues, whether that be through words or body language. Critical thinking. This competency emphasizes that employees must identify and respond to needs based on the understanding of the situational context.
This would be portrayed in a work setting when a project or task is assigned. As an employee, you should be brainstorming ways of completing the task successfully as well as anticipating any issues that can occur to problem solve for solutions. These three nays competencies are important skills to build upon from now and continuing into your career. Additionally, you can look at equity and inclusion.
These specific terms have become buzzwords within various professional fields, but what do they really need? They're becoming critical aspects of every workplace, and they can be displayed in many ways. Some examples include actively attempting to find ways of being more inclusive with projects and tasks assigned, whether it be to accommodate various disabilities, respecting various races, cultures, or societal backgrounds. You should also be prepared to demonstrate flexibility and keep an open mind to creating a welcoming, diverse environment.
Leadership and teamwork. These two terms are each a separate competency, but they go more hand in hand than most they are aware of. In a workplace setting, it is important to show leadership qualities that are shown by approaching tasks with positive attitude and confidence. When dealing with a difficult project or task, it is important to demonstrate leadership capabilities by initiating ideas and motivating others to put their best foot forward to complete the task effectively.
An effective leader is also an effective team member, collaborating with colleagues whenever possible to achieve a common goal in promoting inclusivity in a group setting is displayed by both a leader and a team member. To produce the best results in a work setting, it is critical to step up when possible and work with colleagues impactfully within the company. Professionalism. This competency emphasizes to demonstrate effective work habits and act in the interest at its best for the workplace.
An example of how professionalism can be displayed in a work setting is by showing up on time, being prepared for each day, as well as reporting consistently and effectively in meetings and being reliable to complete certain tasks assigned in a timely manner. Technology. This competency emphasizes to understand and leverage technologies, ethically to enhance efficiencies, complete tasks, and accomplish goals. This competency can be displayed in a work setting by consistently pursuing opportunities to strengthen your skills and learn new tools within the specific program to improve productivity and efficiencies within the certain site.
It is also critical to navigate and adapt to new technology as time progresses. Things are constantly changing and it is important to stay up to date with the latest trends to continue to improve as an employee.
