Namibian Elections

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

As Namibia prepares to hold its presidential elections, the court dismissed a case aimed at preventing the use of electronic voting machines. Opponents of President Hage Geingob feared the machines could be used to rig the results. Ten candidates are expected to run for presidency, with Geingob expected to win with a reduced margin, due to voter anger over the worst economic crisis since independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. The National Unity Democratic Organisation's Esther Muinjangue is the country's first female candidate participating in these presidential elections. To look at this we joined by: • Lesley Blaauw, senior lecturer at the University of Namibia • Grant Masterson, senior programme manager of Governance at the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy of Africa (EISA)
