至于隋唐以后，儒、释、道三家学术阵容的形成，当然有其历史背景，远因已如上述，近因则另有新的面目。由于唐室李氏宗亲，自唐太宗以来，即诏定道教为国教，尊奉李老君为教主，因此而奠定道教在唐代政教上的根基。又因为唐室君臣醉心佛学，故虽尊奉道教，实则佛、道并重，但在人事地位上，略加分别而已。
