NASA's Crew 6 Launch and Thoughts on SpaceX's Crew Dragon, Soyuz, War, and Hope for Humanity

from Today In Space · host Alex G. Orphanos

On this episode, Alex shares his thoughts in the wake of the Crew 6 mission where NASA will send two NASA Astronauts, a UAE Astronaut, and Russian Cosmonaut to the International Space Station onboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon vehicle. Human spaceflight has a history tied to defense and war, from the base technology of rockets (V2 Rocket), and the Space Race to the moon between the US and Soviet Russia, and the eventual Apollo-Soyuz docking in the middle of the Cold-War. Even today, while Ukraine and Russia are at war on Earth the human beings on board the ISS work together to survive in Space without the borders we draw in the literal sand for countries and states here on Earth. Questions/Thoughts for this week: Is there hope for humanity in crewed missions like this? Does the continued partnership between Astronauts and Cosmonauts in space serve as an example for peace and how we can work together? What do partnerships with the UAE to develop their Astronaut training mean to humanity? Can Human Space Travel serve as insulation to the fog of war on Earth? What would the alternate universe look like if America never replaced their ability to send Astronauts from US Soil when Russia invaded Ukraine and restricted Soyuz launches to allies? We'd love to know what you think! Email us at [email protected] These are all questions & thoughts Alex works through in this episode, as Crew 6 looks to launch on March 2, 12:34 AM EST and the life-boat replacement Soyuz has docked to the ISS to replace the previous Soyuz with the micrometeroid-impacted hull. Join us for the last episode of February! Best of luck Crew 6 team on launch and docking with the ISS.  SOURCES:  https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/the-four-crew-members-of-the-spacex-crew-6-mission-3 https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacestation/2023/02/15/roscosmos-reviews-soyuz-progress-vehicle-science-and-cargo-ops-keep-crew-busy/ https://www.economist.com/briefing/2023/01/05/how-elon-musks-satellites-have-saved-ukraine-and-changed-warfare?utm_medium=social-media.content.np&utm_source=linkedin&utm_campaign=editorial-social&utm_content=discovery.content https://www.defensenews.com/opinion/commentary/2023/01/20/stocking-ukraine-could-generate-foreign-military-sales-boom/?utm_source=sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=dfn-dnr https://payloadspace.com/spacety-places-sanctions-on-ukraine/ Here's to building a fantastic future - and continued progress in Space (and humanity)!
