On Ukrainian Jewish Heritage, an interview with Paulina Zelitsky, who defected from the USSR to Canada in a daring escape at Gander airport with her children in 1971. In Part 1, we learned why Paulina felt her life was in danger while working on a Soviet naval base in Cuba, and becoming privy to the top-secret operations of the little-known second Cuban Missile Crisis in the late 1960s. Defection was also dangerous, but she considered it less dangerous than staying. After a career working as a civil engineer in Canada, she retired and wrote her memoirs.
